“I've been immersed in the world of education since I was young,” says Alice Levasseur, a new professor in the University of Ottawa Faculty of Education. “My grandmother was a teacher, my mother, sister and my in-laws are all teachers.” When it came time for her to think about university, “teaching was the obvious career path,” she says.

“Growing up in a society with quotas limiting women in fields like engineering, yet seeing many still pursuing these disciplines, inspired my research about the online representation of women in STEM,” says Golshan Mahjoub, an international student from Iran and doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Education.

School absenteeism has surged post-pandemic. In one Ontario school board, the rate of elementary students missing 20 or more school days rose from 15% in 2018-2019 to 33% in 2022-2023.
