Maintaining the Grounds of Urban and Territorial Governance in Contexts of Socio-Environmental Vulnerability

We are pleased to welcome Sophie Nemoz, associate professor of sociology at Universit茅 Marie et Louis Pasteur (France), for a public conference:
In situations of socio-environmental vulnerability, how to keep in repair the grounds of urban and territorial governance?
Prof. Nemoz will explore how to care for and manage urban and territorial fragilities in the Anthropocene. Drawing from her transdisciplinary research, she will offer critical insights into the notion of 鈥渕aintenance鈥 in governance.
Her conference will contribute to a better understanding of how to manage urban and territorial fragilities in the Anthropocene. The multiscalar and transdisciplinary analyses from her research on inhabited soils in the context of climate change will be shared across scientific, social, and political dimensions. Sophie NEMOZ will present her critical and conceptual contributions to the notion of 鈥渕aintenance.鈥
About the Speaker:
Sophie NEMOZ is an associate professor at the Universit茅 Marie et Louis Pasteur and a researcher at the Laboratory of Sociology and Anthropology, affiliated with the Claude Nicolas Ledoux Institute for Human and Environmental Sciences (MSHE CNRS INSHS), where she leads several scientific initiatives.
She is the elected head of the thematic network 鈥淪ociology of the Environment and Risks鈥 within the French Sociological Association (RT38 鈥 AFS), and an elected member of both the European network 鈥淓nvironment & Society鈥 (RN 12 鈥 European Sociological Association) and the 鈥淗ousing and Built Environment鈥 network of the International Sociological Association (RC 43 鈥 ISA).
Her research focuses on the multi-level territorialization (local, national, and international scales) of ecological challenges in human settlements in both French and European contexts. This includes topics such as governance practices, innovations and risks, and the diversity of stakeholders by profession, gender, and life stage, as well as territorial and supranational policies.
Together with Paul Cary and H茅l猫ne Melin, she is currently co-editing the upcoming issue of the journal D茅veloppement Durable & Territoires, and recently published a book chapter titled 鈥淪ustainable housing: international relations between housing and the environment revisited鈥, co-edited in 2023 by Jo毛l Kassiola & Timothy W. Luke, in the international reference volume The Palgrave Handbook of Environmental Politics and Theory.
