Anthony Daimsis, FCIArb, is a recognized authority in arbitration, sales law, and contract law, with over 20 years of experience in practice and academia. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and currently serves as Chair of the CIArb Canada Branch. He is a Barrister and Solicitor licensed by the Law Society of Ontario.
Professor Daimsis began teaching at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa in 2003 and directs the Common Law Section鈥檚 renowned mooting program. He teaches Contract Law, International Sales Law, and International Commercial Arbitration.
As head coach of Ottawa鈥檚 Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team鈥攐ne of the world鈥檚 largest and most prestigious moots鈥攈is teams have won a record number of championships. He previously coached the Jessup Public International Law Moot team, leading them to five national titles and numerous awards, and his Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Moot teams have won global competitions and repeatedly finished first overall.
Professor Daimsis is also an Associate Door Tenant at Littleton Chambers in London, England, and a member of its international arbitrator group. His arbitration experience spans roles as counsel, arbitrator, and expert witness in disputes involving foreign investment, international sales, construction, telecommunications, and underground resources. He sits on panels of institutions including the ICDR and FVDRC, and has advised governments in South America and South Asia on arbitration and foreign investment.
He serves as Case Comments and Developments Editor for the Canadian Journal of Commercial Arbitration and is Canada's national correspondent for the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).
Before joining the University of Ottawa, Professor Daimsis practised international law at a leading law firm in Austria. His work included disputes resolved under the auspices of ICSID, ICC, and the ICDR (formerly AAA), with a focus on foreign investment, telecom, construction, and resource projects.
He has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions, including in the landmark case Uber Technologies Inc. v. Heller, and has been cited by the Court.
A sought-after arbitrator and public speaker, Professor Daimsis is frequently invited to speak on international arbitration, international sales, and oral advocacy. He has delivered lectures and keynotes in cities including London, Moscow, New York, Naypyidaw, Stockholm, Toronto, Tehran, and Vienna.
He is the lead instructor for the Professional Certificate in International Arbitration, a training program designed for senior lawyers seeking a practical introduction to arbitration from commencement to enforcement.
His publications include contributions to Dispute Resolution: Readings and Case Studies (4th ed.), International Business Transactions: Standard Forms and Documents, and several business law texts used in MBA and law programs across North America.
Professor Daimsis is an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Fellows and Legal Scholars of the Center for International Legal Studies and a recipient of the National Capital Teaching Award.
