Samit and Reshma Sharma Scholarships in Law, Technology and Society

The Samit and Reshma Sharma Scholarships in Law, Technology and Society seek to enhance societal knowledge and interdisciplinary expertise in technology law, ethics and policy.

The Samit and Reshma Sharma Scholarships in Law, Technology and Society were created in 2024 by the Samit & Reshma Sharma Foundation to celebrate the excellence of research and mentoring at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa, Canada鈥檚 premiere research hub for technology law, ethics and policy.  

The scholarships aim to enhance societal knowledge and interdisciplinary expertise in law, ethics and policy surrounding technology by supporting graduate students at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research excellence with the most significant practical impact in law, technology and society. 

Scholarships

Each year, the selection committee will award a minimum scholarship of $3,500.  

These scholarships are generously supported by donations made to the Centre by the Samit & Reshma Sharma Foundation. 

Eligibility

Nominees must be enrolled as full-time graduate students in a master鈥檚 or doctoral program of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa. The awardee will have to continue to be enrolled as a full-time student to receive the scholarship.

Nominees must be under the primary academic supervision of a Faculty member of the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society.

Nominees must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research excellence in graduate studies with the most significant practical impact in technology law, ethics and policy. 

Nominations

Students cannot directly apply for this award.

Each year, professors who are Faculty members of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society will be invited to nominate candidates. Each professor can submit up to two nominations: 1 for a master's student and 1 for PhD student.

Nomination may be supported by the dean of the Faculty or the chair of a school or department in which the student is primarily enrolled. The nomination may also be supported by other professors, affiliated or not with the Centre, such as co-supervisors or committee members. There is no limit as to how many candidates a professor can support.

The must be sent to [email protected] by the nominating CLTS Faculty member. The justification of the nomination must not exceed 500 words.

There is one nomination campaign per academic year in the Spring. The Centre鈥檚 affiliates will receive a message with the deadline to apply when the annual campaign is launched.
