What is your role working in Information Technology?
I work as a Communication Officer in the IT department. My main role is to support digital communications by managing content for student-facing platforms, particularly our Instagram account and internal webpages.
What degree are you currently pursuing?
Master of Digital Transformation and Innovation.
What did people in your group do to help you integrate into the group and help get you started on the activities assigned to you?
I currently work most closely with Morgan and Iris, but I’ve found every team member to be both professional and kind. From our supervisor Jacqueline to my direct lead Morgan, and other colleagues like Mehdi, Vanessa, and Tuong, everyone has made me feel welcome. They often explain what they are working on and, if I’m involved, clearly guide me through the steps to contribute.
What are your main responsibilities in your position in Information Technology?
I am primarily responsible for managing the IT department’s Instagram account. This includes designing graphics, writing post captions, and planning content that helps students stay informed about cybersecurity and other IT-related topics. I also contribute to editing and improving the IT student page to make it more engaging and user-friendly.
What do you like about your job in this work term?
I enjoy every part of the job—it’s both fun and challenging. If I had to pick one favorite, it would be filming and editing a farewell video for a retiring staff member with Martin. Since the staff member loved golf, the video featured a golf ball traveling through iconic campus spots before returning to Martin’s hands. It was a beautiful way to honor his contributions and also highlighted the scenic beauty of the campus.
What skillsets have you developed since working in Information Technology?
I learned to use Pixton to create educational comic strips. It’s an efficient and highly engaging tool that really captures students’ attention.
Why did you apply for this position in Information Technology?
I applied for this position because it was a university-based opportunity that closely matched my background and skill set. It aligned well with both my past experience and what I’m currently studying.
What was your biggest challenge in your first few weeks? How did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was working in French. Many tasks, such as creating Instagram graphics, require bilingual content. As a beginner in French, I initially used AI tools for translation. Thankfully, team members like Vanessa and Mehdi are fluent in French and were very generous in helping me proofread and improve the language quality.
What is it like working in your group in Information Technology?
It has been a fun and enriching experience. Every team member has unique strengths: Morgan is incredibly creative, Vanessa is a French expert, Mehdi is a great external communicator, Tuong tells amazing stories and takes great photos, Iris has an excellent eye for design, and Jacqueline is like the captain who guides the whole team.
What emoticon do you find yourself using a lot at work?
I use the smiley face emoji most often. Initially, I picked it up from Morgan because it felt very friendly. Over time, I started using it naturally—it’s a small way to bring warmth into daily communication.
How do you find working hybrid? Which do you prefer?
I enjoy hybrid work. Working from home reduces commute time and adds flexibility, while being on campus allows for more efficient in-person communication and connection with colleagues.
Did you feel that you are being sufficiently challenged in your job position? If so, how is this being done?
Yes, I feel that there are new challenges every week. In the beginning, I had to learn how to use certain design tools. Once I became familiar, I was asked to edit webpages using Drupal. In the future, I might learn to shoot immersive video. I really enjoy the process of continuous learning and growth.
