Vanessa Nuimbing Mitcho Epse Ngameleu
Meet Vanessa - Digital Communications and Change Management Officer

What was your last career change?

My most recent career change was joining the University of Ottawa as a Digital Communications and Change Management Officer. This role marks an exciting new chapter, giving me the opportunity to apply my expertise in a dynamic academic environment; particularly within Information Technology. Before this, I worked as a Communications and Marketing Officer in my home country, where I gained valuable experience in strategic communication, campaign management, and team coordination. At 91ƷϳԹ, I am especially eager to deepen my knowledge of change management and communication within the university setting.

What made it successful?

What made this move successful was a combination of leveraging my existing skills in communication and team coordination, along with my openness to learning new skills, new systems and new areas like change management within an IT context. The supportive and collaborative environment at the University of Ottawa also played a big role, providing me with the mentorship and resources needed to thrive. Finally, my strong motivation to make a meaningful impact helped me fully engage in my new role and drive positive change.

What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?

The biggest challenge in adapting to my new role was learning to navigate the specific systems and processes within the IT environment while simultaneously mastering change management principles. Balancing the technical aspects with effective communication and stakeholder engagement required a steep learning curve. However, with support from my team and a proactive approach to learning, I was able to overcome these challenges and integrate successfully, within a very short period.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?

My advice to anyone considering a career change is to embrace flexibility and a growth mindset. Be open to learning new skills and stepping outside your comfort zone. Take time to research the new field thoroughly and seek out mentors or networks that can guide you. Most importantly, trust your ability to adapt and grow; change can be challenging but also very incredibly rewarding.

How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?

Colleagues can play a key role in helping someone transition into their new responsibilities by offering guidance, sharing knowledge openly, and creating a welcoming environment. Small gestures; like checking in, answering questions with patience, or simply making themselves available; can make a big difference. Encouraging collaboration and being understanding of the learning curve also help foster confidence and a smoother integration.

What do you look forward to in your day?

I look forward to learning something new, contributing to meaningful projects, and collaborating with colleagues. These moments keep me motivated throughout the day.

If you were a chocolate bar, which one would you be?

I’d be a Kinder Bueno; smooth, layered, and full of surprises. Just like in my work, I balance structure and creativity, and I always aim to bring a bit of delight to every project!

What ingredient should never be found on a pizza?

Pineapple — some things are better for smoothies!

What three items would you bring if you were shipped to a deserted island?

A satellite phone, a water purifier, and a good book; survive, stay hydrated, and stay sane!
