Ghuna Bdiwi, Ph.D., is an assistant professor and senior researcher. She holds a PhD in Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, where she also completed an LLM in Research and a Master of Common Law. In addition, she holds a Master in Banking and Finance from Universit茅 Montesquieu Bordeaux IV (France) and a Bachelor of Laws from Beirut Arab University (Lebanon).
Her academic and professional journey spans several countries and institutions, with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in international law, finance, and policy. She has taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels in Canada, the U.S., and Saudi Arabia, covering subjects such as Public International Law, Criminal law, and Legal Research and Writing.
From 2022 to 2023, Dr. Bdiwi served as an Alex Trebek Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Ottawa鈥檚 Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC). Her work focused on international criminal accountability, conflict-related displacement, and peacebuilding strategies in post-conflict societies.
She has also worked as a legal consultant, where she provided legal expertise on documenting war crimes and developed capacity-building programs for civil society groups.
Her academic research is complemented by legal practice, having previously led her own law firm in Damascus and completed an articling position at Jared Will & Associates in Toronto, a firm specializing in refugee and immigration law.
She has published extensively on issues of forced displacement, crimes against humanity, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), and the challenges of seeking justice in ongoing conflicts. Her work appears in journals such as the Journal of International Criminal Justice, Arab Law Quarterly, and in various policy outlets.
She also serves on several academic committees and is a Board Member of the Canadian Council on International Law.
